Published to accompany reconstruction of a provocative 1983 structure by Vito Acconci, this catalogue contains an illuminating interview with the artist and an essay that places his first permanent architectural commission in the overall context of his influential and illustrious career. Following his work as a writer, his very public career as a "body artist" of performances and video works, and subsequently as a creator of deployable museum and gallery installations, Acconci gradually transformed his solo artistic practice into that of the Acconci Studio, which he established in 1988 at the time of his New York Museum of Modern Art retrospective Vito Acconci: Public Places. The Middlebury College Way Station I (Study Chamber) was commissioned at the time of Acconci's one-month 1983 residency at Middlebury College, and it stood for several years as his first permanent commission. The original structure was destroyed by vandals in 1985, but its steel shell has been reused in this replica, which now stands on the grounds of the College's Mahaney Center for the Arts, adjacent to the Middlebury College Museum of Art. The catalogue essay reviews the history and tumultuous reception of Acconci's 1983 residency, its implications for the artist's oeuvre, and its catalytic influence on the College's subsequent establishment of a program for public art. Interviewed by Stephen Donadio, editor of The New England Review, who was Dean of Arts and Humanities at Middlebury and was Acconci's liaison to the Art Department during his visit, Acconci reflects on this crucial period in his career, when he was becoming an architectural theoretician and designer of award-winning public spaces. Beautifully illustrated, thoughtfully conceived, and essential to any understanding of the imaginative underpinnings of Acconci's prodigious productivity, the catalogue provides a compelling account of a critical phase in the artist's transit from private into public space.
