Kindergarten-Grade 3-Discovering a baby in the midst of a cattle drive is more than a challenge to Dan, Dom, and Deke-rough, tough cowboys a bit short on nurturing skills. All three rise to the occasion in their unique ways but realize the baby needs his mom. After a hair-raising gallop through a thunderstorm, the intrepid trio catches up to the wagon train that likely lost the little tyke. Sure enough, a teary-eyed mother is united with her child and three teary-eyed cowboys go back to their cows. This may not be the sort of tale one would expect from an English author/illustrator. However, Brownlow has taken a delightful leap from Three Men and a Baby into a world of his own. His rhyming text has an R. W. Service flavor and even John Wayne couldn't fault the cartoon illustrations. Perhaps the average cowpoke poet wouldn't choose the phrase "He sicked up all his food," but it scans well and doesn't cloud comprehension a bit. Deke looks like he escaped from Toy Story and Dan sports an atypical pink shirt, yet all three are distinctly wonderful from their hats to their bowed legs and curled-up boot toes. It would be a shame not to read this text aloud and share the vibrant, crisp illustrations for a Western unit, to prepare youngsters for the arrival of a little bundle in their own homes-or just for fun.
