Fedhealth's new 3rd Edition was expanded 44 pages to accommodate many new topics and enhancements. Two key additions include 24 new pages in the TERRORISM topic covering cyber, biological, chemical and radiological threats with tips on what citizens should be aware of during these types of incidents. Also, APPENDIX A - U.S. Department of Homeland Security was expanded to include the District of Columbia Emergency Management Agency’s "Terrorist Threat Advisory System" with suggestions for Residents and Businesses. (In other words, each color-code now has many tips on what family members and business owners should be aware of and doing at each threat level - along with standard list of what federal agencies should be doing at each color.)
The entire manual was reorganized so the information flows easier for consumers. Section 1 now has all Family information, checklists, Emergency Plan templates, and suggestions for Kits (both Disaster Kits to "grab and go" during a disaster situation and First Aid Kits). Section 2 now contains all disaster topics (from Avalanches to Winter Storms) but all BEFORE tips are 2-color format like DURING and AFTER tips in previous Editions. Some other additions include Air Quality Mitigation (i.e. tips on carbon monoxide, mold & radon), Household Chemical emergencies, Safford-Simpson Scale with storm surge data (for hurricanes), Fujita Scale (for tornadoes), plus many others. Section 3 has all Basic First Aid tips now (from Bites & Stings to Strokes) along with some new topics like West Nile, ticks, and SARs. Section 4 still contains American and Canadian Red Cross information plus U.S. and Canadian Federal, Provincial, and State Emergency Contact information for citizens. There are also many new "Additional Resources & Web sites" with some specific ones flagged for Educators, Schools, & Kids. The more the public is prepared for a disaster, the less strain it places on North American First Responders. This manual helps families and individuals "be aware… be prepared… and have a plan" for most types of emergencies, first aid needs, and natural or man-made disasters before they strike. It provides an excellent easy-to-use resource for all family members… from children to seniors.
