Who was the first to write about a certain disease, diagnose it, and treat it? This book answers those questions for a wide range of diseases, from Abetalipoproteinemia to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. What were the medical practitioners of previous generations hoping to achieve? What were their patients expecting of them? The answers are found in these quotations.Containing over 3,000 entries, and now updated with more than 450 new quotations, this new edition of Medicine in Quotations is the most comprehensive collection of its type published in over 30 years. It is much more than a random collection of famous sayings relating to sickness and health, disease and treatment; it is a portrait of medicine throughout recorded history. You will discover how medical concepts and practices have developed and shifted through the millennia, and how many illnesses recognized today were first identified a thousand or more years ago. Quotations are organized by topic, and each is fully referenced, allowing curious readers to return to the original source. Subject and author indices make it easy to find quotations of interest. Medicine in Quotations is an invaluable resource for writers, speakers, and all those interested in the history of medicine.

Quotations do more than add wit to speeches. They offer a glimpse into the development of ideas throughout history and provide differing points of view on a subject. Medicine in Quotations, first published in 2000, contains 3,500 quotations, 500 of which are new to this edition. The editors are physicians. Huth is the editor emeritus of the Annals of Internal Medicine, and Murray is professor emeritus and former dean of medicine at Dalhousie University.
The quotations are organized alphabetically by subject and numbered consecutively throughout the book. The author, date, and source of each quotation are included. An "Author-Citation Index" contains the bibliographic citations. A subject index makes it easy for readers to locate material. Among the gems that users will find here are Michel de Montaigne's remark that "Sometimes it is the body that surrenders to age, sometimes, too it is the mind; and I have seen enough whose brains were enfeebled before their stomach and legs." And Henry George Miller's "The most valuable diagnostic instrument is the passage of time."
Medicine in Quotations provides quotations on medical and scientific subjects that do not appear in general quotation books such as Bartlett's Familiar Quotations (Little Brown, 2002).It will be a useful addition to academic library collections supporting health-sciences and history-of-medicine programs. Large public libraries with extensive quotation collections will want to consider it also. Barbara Bibel
