About the Author

Burnam Jones was born in 1895 in Kansas City, Missouri in a world that was so far removed from our own that his boyhood recollections are included in an appendix of this book as a matter of historical interest. He was twenty-one years old when he enlisted in the United States Aremy to fight in the war to end alkl wars. Starting as a Private he worked his way up to First Lieutenant, as he took part in all the ugliest fighting at St. Mihiel, the Argonne and Verdun. In the days after the Armistice he set down a record of his experiencese, which at a later time he expanded and rewrote from the perspective of ten years. He just wanted to leave them as a memoir for his daughter. Annabel Johnson, an author in her own right, copied and edited the texty and worked to enhance the photos, which survived the years remarkably well. She saw to it that the book was published as a tribute to a man she loved and respected. The title is her own choice. She says, "My father was a good man to have at your side."
