She's a woman who wants nothing.

Tamara Cassetti has made it her life's goal to take children out of dangerous situations and find them loving families. But as a professional social worker her involvement ends there. Raised by institutions herself, she has learned to keep attachments superficial.

What they both need they can only find in each other.

But a young orphaned boy makes them both question what's important in life. Tamara has no dreams of happily ever after. She believes love is only an illusion, especially with a wealthy, arrogant playboy such as Dale. Yet, as she watches Dale overcome his affluent upbringing and give his love to the one child who has stolen her heart, she fears they will both lure her into their world forever.

Dale sighed. Who leaves a house empty and unlocked, with three young kids inside who obviously haven't learned to turn off the TV or any lights before leaving? Dale rubbed his temples and turned to leave, but he heard a faint moan. It came from behind the bed.

Dale hurried over and saw Raffi on the floor with his eyes closed. A large, steel, yellow truck about twice as big as his head lay on the floor next to him, and a huge red spot marked Raffi's forehead. Dale lifted the boy and placed him on the bed. "Raffi," he said and patted the boy's face.

Raffi moaned again and lifted his hand to his forehead. Then he opened his eyes, saw Dale leaning over him, and in a startled, defensive move, pushed himself to a sitting position and slid backward, away from Dale.

"Hey, Raffi, it's okay. What happened, kid?"

Raffi frowned and tears filled his eyes.

Dale's heart broke. Was it just him Raffi feared or was he afraid of everyone? "I came to pick you up and found you lying on the floor. No one else is in the house."

"Donny, trow the truck."

"Donny? He threw that truck at you?"

Raffi nodded. "Hit my head."

Dale looked down at the heavy, steel truck then at the red spot on Raffi's head. It hit him all right, and knocked him out. He placed his hand on Raffi's forehead. "That must have hurt."

Raffi nodded again.

"Is Donny a boy who lives here?"

"He hates me, and I hate him too."

"You guys fight a lot, huh?" Dale sat beside Raffi on the bed.

"He likes to beat me up."

"Have you told anyone."

He shook his head. "Can't, he hurt me more. But I don't cry, even in night when he burn me with cigarettes and matches."

Dale tried not to show the shock or anger bubbling up inside him. His fingers fisted around the bed coverings. How could some bully be hurting this child and the care giver not notice? "Can you show me where he burns you?"
