Gr 7-9--Whitelaw has obviously researched her subject in depth. She quotes frequently from Hawthorne's writings, and readers learn just how important and voluminous a writer the man became. Unfortunately, the organization is often confusing, and the approach to the subject occasionally lacks appeal for young readers. Numerous black-and-white illustrations are included, but not always near the appropriate text. Very few are of Hawthorne himself; most are of his contemporaries and locations important to him. An additional purchase for libraries needing more information about this important American writer.
