Keating with this enjoyable anthology of 17 short stories by some of the biggest names in the business, including P.D. James, Peter Lovesey and Colin Dexter. The tales run the gamut from Len Deighton's tongue-in-cheek "Sherlock Holmes and the Titanic Swindle" to June Thomson's clever but grim "A Case for Inspector Ghote." The standouts are from James and Lovesey; Baroness James takes a break from chronicling Commander Dalgleish's exploits to present a taut psychological tale of murder in "Hearing Ghote," while Lovesey's "Popping Round to the Post" ranks with that author's smartest and most twisty efforts.
