Beginning with words: Expressing ideas typographically

Designers communicate with form, color, images, and composition. Writers communicate with words. When the two work in tandem, they are a powerful team. Finding visual possibilities within the text combines the art of language with the language of art. The result is an added layer of meaning and nuance that neither medium can easily convey on its own. Fundamentally, graphic design is about presenting the printed word. So, in a sense, tinkering with typography is just returning to our roots and giving those roots a playful twist.
