Synopsis

Set in the future when Earth has colonized the moon, Mars, and its orbitals, Remains follows the adventures of security officer Mace Preston, who learns that his wife, Helen, has been killed in a construction accident on Mars.

Mace takes it upon himself to figure out what happened – an investigation that eventually costs him his job. Convinced the accident was sabotage, Mace’s search for the truth is thwarted at every turn, and his quest becomes an obsession.

He discovers a zealous web of interplanetary terrorists and realizes he is falling in love with Nemily Dollard, a Cerebro-Augmented person sponsored by Helen for emigration to the colony Aea. With Nemily's ability to plug directly into computer systems, she may hold the clue to Helen's death, as well as a string of unexplained accidents across the galaxy—if only she knew how to access and process the information. Mace tries to help her, but time is running out for both of them as they grow closer to solving the truth about Helen's “accident.”

Reviews

Security officer Mace Preston was born on Mars but married into the station community Aea, which is, like other space communities, cut off from Earth and prohibited from trading in Earth artifacts. When his wife is declared dead in a freak accident after the bizarre failure of a molifiber dome on Hellas Planitia, Mace investigates and, after poking his nose in where it clearly isn't wanted, retires from PolyCarb on a generous settlement. He continues investigating, though, because his wife's body was never found, and the cover-up of the event indicates industrial sabotage of the worst kind. After he meets Nemily, from Lune, at his birthday party, he learns he is under investigation because PolyCarb suspects that Nemily was a player in the destruction of Hellas Planitia and other similar events at other communities, and that Mace has more evidence than he will admit. Mace's eventual discovery of the truth about his wife and new knowledge about the fate of the Earth caps a fast-paced, entertaining adventure. Regina Schroeder
