About the Author:
Heather Simonsen writes monthly feature cover stories for The Salt Lake Tribune on health & science and parenting issues. She’s written for The Ensign Magazine and has been the featured subject in O, The Oprah Magazine, and in First for Women Magazine. She was a spokesperson for the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay and traveled across the country doing live television interviews and speeches in front of large crowds. Heather was present when Mohammed Ali lit the cauldron in Atlanta. She witnessed the true Olympic spirit—everyday people overcoming hardships in the smallest of towns and largest of cities. She was responsible for selecting 100 honorary 9-11 torchbearers and learned how resilient the human spirit can be. Heather was also a torchbearer and ran with the Olympic Flame in San Antonio, Texas, the city where she grew up. Heather was a full-time television journalist for five years at ABC-4 television news in Salt Lake City. She also did special reports for NBC Newschannel during the disappearance of Elizabeth Smart.
Heather earned high honors as a senior fellow and a magna cum laude graduate in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. Heather earned an M.A. in communications from Brigham Young University with a published thesis on the dangerous effects of television reenactment programs on youth.
Heather has an identical twin sister, Holly, whom she adores, and three wonderful brothers. Her father studied at Stanford University and is a department head and beloved math professor at Texas State University. He’s a genius with numbers so Heather gravitated toward language arts, but finds that she has an unrequited love for science.
She is the stay-at-home mother of two beautiful children: Halle Rose and Christian. Her husband, Soren, is an award-winning architect and city planner. The two remodeled their historic Salt Lake City home. Heather loves gourmet cooking, baking and has even cooked her famous pizzas as the guest chef on a local television news program. Her favorite cooking companions, though, are her kids. She also enjoys jogging in her neighborhood and hiking in the mountains. Heather is an avid reader. To Kill a Mockingbird is her favorite book.
