Synopsis
KoaÕs Seed is an age-old tale retold by Carolyn Han and illustrated by Kathleen Peterson.
Long, long ago in HawaiÔi, an aliÔi gathered all the men in the village and announced he would select a new leaderÑsomething that had never happened before. To each, he gave one seed for planting. A young man named Koa took his seed carefully and lovingly tended it for a year. From this seed, Koa is taught a valuable lesson.
This is an age-old tale that has its roots in antiquity. It is a story that has traveled with camel caravans and sailing ships many times around the world. This is the first version to be retold in a childrenÕs book with a Hawaiian theme. Written by local writer Carolyn Han and masterfully illustrated by Kathleen Peterson, KoaÕs Seed is a classic tale that will delight and teach for years to come.

About the Author
Carolyn Han received a BA in English from the University of HawaiÔi at Hilo and an MA in comparative literature from San Diego State University. From an early age, she has been fascinated with stories from other cultures. In 1985, Han traveled to China to teach and collect stories in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Since then, she has continued traveling along the Silk and Incense roads listening to and writing stories.
Han has won numerous awards of excellence for her short stories, poems and books. She currently teaches at HawaiÔi Community College in Hilo.
About the Illustrator Kathleen B. Peterson has illustrated 19 books. She is the founding director of the Central Utah Art Center and displays her landscape paintings in galleries around the west and on the Big Island of HawaiÔi. A past resident of HawaiÔi, Peterson currently divides her time between Utah and Idaho.
