(An excerpt from Chapter 24, "Zeal Without Knowledge") There is something that I need to impress upon you that goes completely contrary to the world s way of thinking. Often it is said that, "What you don t know can t hurt you." But in reality, what you do not know can kill you "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge " (Hosea 4:6a) In a way, there is something else that is even more dangerous than being completely uninformed about a particular subject. For some people, a little bit of knowledge is the catalyst for premature action in a particular issue. Such zealots do not realize how little they actually know: "Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth." (Proverbs 19:2) "Willingness and stupidity don t go well together. If you are too eager, you will miss the road." (Proverbs 19:2, CEV) "It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way." (Proverbs 19:2, NIV) Sometimes Christians have a tendency to take something from the scriptures concerning their finances and try to run with it without first laying the proper foundation, which involves more than spiritual wisdom. We need to know what to do with money in a practical sense. For example, if we want to get involved in real estate, we need to get our hands on as much information as we can in that field to help us in our success. Otherwise, we will end up learning the hard way things that we could have prevented if we had simply read some books and received some sound financial advice from those who have already been there. Let me tell you a story. There was a young couple from Louisiana who came to our church. While they were with us, they began to prosper. He was a musician in the city, and God was really blessing them (he played for Lion King, for example). As God prospered them, in time, they bought a house. As more time passed, they began hearing the message on "debt cancellation" as it has been taught by numerous Word-based ministers. The teaching they heard was sound, Bible-based, and well taught by very credible teachers no problem there. Despite this sound teaching, however, this couple was lacking in their necessary comprehension of some "hands on" knowledge of financial issues especially the dynamics of real estate. They bought the house back around 1996. At that time, they paid something in the figure of about $175,000 for it which in our part of the country means it was a fairly small home. It was a little three-bedroom home (with hardly any yard), and each bedroom was tiny. However, it was sufficient for their needs at the time, and they had been happy with it until... They kept hearing, "get out of debt," from these various ministers. Yet, they were not hearing that message with hearts full of wisdom and heads filled with adequate knowledge. Their mental "filters" and limited paradigms about finances were distorting the message they heard into something that it was not. They were truly being taught the Word of God, but they heard it in a twisted way. Nevertheless, they added up their credit card bills, mortgage, and all their other debts and took off like a rocket to act on what they had "heard." The real estate market was rallying out here on the East Coast at the time. So after they figured out how much they owed, and "knowing" that God wanted them out of debt, they decided to sell their house. Instead of consulting a REALTOR® or some other form of real estate professional, they decided that they would "save" themselves the commission and sell it themselves. They put a "For Sale By Owner" sign out front, ran an add in the paper, and they "successfully" sold it on their own and for an amount that basically got them out of debt, plus put about $10-12,000 in their pockets. They came to me with great exuberance and proclaimed the praise report, "We re out of debt! We sold our house in one day!" I said, "Praise the Lord! What did you sell it for?" They said, "We sold our house for $245,000!" Shocked, I responded, "You sold your house for two hundred what?!"

Taken aback by my sudden lack of enthusiasm, they said, "Well, what do you mean? We re out of debt! We re going to move back to Louisiana and buy another house that s even bigger than the other one and it s only $85,000!"

I replied, "Oh, praise God. Well, we re really going to miss you. And while I am at it, I really think you missed God because you sold your house $150,000 too cheap. You wonder why you sold it in one day."

They would have paid a typical real estate commission of about $24,000 and profited another $126,000 over what they actually made if they had augmented their ignorance by hiring a good professional to help them. If they had come to the leadership at the church, we could have even helped them to find a better way to eliminate their consumer debt and position themselves financially for even greater increase without having to leave the church God had called them to attend.

Too many of us are trying to make financial decisions without good counsel. I do not pretend to know everything, but I know people who know a lot of stuff. Everything I have I am willing to make available to you every contact I have on Wall Street and every person I have around the ProVision Network. Everywhere I go I am on a hunt for the financial answer that you need ."
