Synopsis

Fiction. In this highly anticipated surreal noir collaboration between Mexico's greatest writer and its most feared revolutionary, the consistently excellent Paco Ignacio Taibo II and Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos create an uproarious murder mystery with two intersecting story lines in alternating chapters. Marcos' hero Elias Contreras - an odd but charming mountain man from Chiapas, Mexico - travels to Mexico City in search of an elusive and hideous murderer named Morales. Meanwhile, Taibo's famous series detective, the philosophical Hector Belascoaran Shayne, guzzles Coca-Cola and smokes cigarettes furiously through the search for his own "Morales." The two stories collide absurdly and dramatically in the urban sprawl of Mexico City in an unpredictable dance of death with forces at once criminal, historical, and political.

About the Author

Subcomandante Marcos is a spokesperson and strategist for the Zapatistas, an indigenous insurgency movement based in Mexico. He first joined the indigenous guerrilla group which was to become the Zapatistas in the early 1980s. Marcos is author of several books, including Story of the Colors, which won a Firecracker Alternative Book Award, and Our Word is Our Weapon. Taibo was born in Gijon, Spain and has lived in Mexico since 1958. He is the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, which have been published in many languages around the world, including a mystery series starring Mexican Private Investigator Héctor Belascoarán Shayne. He is a professor of history at the Metropolitcan Unviersity of Mexico City.

From Booklist

Told in alternating chapters, Taibo's striking collaboration with the charismatic leftist leader known as Subcomandante Marcos is a curious animal, laying forth planks in the Zapatistas' platform for the rights of indigenous peoples against globalization and privatization with subversive, comic panache. Taibo's one-eyed detective, Hector Belascoaran, finds more questions than answers in his ongoing quest to vanquish evil, this time in the shadowy form of one (or more) Morales, who may have killed a ghost now leaving messages on answering machines around Mexico City. The quixotic Marcos' inspired contribution is Elias Conteras, an ingenuous investigator from Chiapas imbued with the soul of Sancho Panza. Elias' charming irreverence fits well in the anarchic eclecticism that governs the fictional universe of Taibo, whose fans will hardly be surprised to find a porn actor who looks like Osama Bin Laden tossed in with Pancho Villa, Barney the dinosaur, and Gustav Mahler. As one might expect, the political trumps the personal in this curious mix of crime novel and position paper, but it is just strange enough to attract a cult audience. David Wright
