Famous for bending the law to get his man, former Wells Fargo detective Rome Garrett signs on with the Peacemaker Alliance, a covert government agency intent on taming the west. Unfortunately, his first assignment involves teaming up with the only woman who ever broke his heart. But bringing down cold-blooded killer Bulls-Eye Brady would restore his tarnished career, and as a personal bonus, he vows to show his old flame how it feels to love and lose. Retired cardsharp Kat Simmons has been in hiding for six years. Now she’s being asked to risk her hard-won obscurity by baiting the very man she fears. Not only that, the plan involves spending intimate time with Rome, the only man she ever truly loved. Readopting her flamboyant persona, Kat joins Rome on a whirlwind poker tournament tour, gaining notoriety as they clean up at the tables. With any luck, when word gets out that Kat Simmons is back on the circuit, Bulls-Eye Brady will show up to reclaim the woman who “got away.”

Beth Ciotta is the author of Charmed, Lasso the Moon, Romancing the West, and Seduced. She lives in Brigantine, New Jersey.
Much like the dime novels of old, this shoot-’em-up western romance features all the western stereotypes. Rome Garrett and his brothers Athens, London, and Boston are larger than life on the Arizona frontier. Members of a secret agency, they try to impose order on the rowdy territory, and Rome especially wants to bring down Bull’s-Eye Brady, a ruthless killer who six years earlier had stolen away Kat, a spunky professional gambler and the love of Rome’s life. Now Kat, who has changed her lifestyle and her name, offers to come out of hiding and team up with the Garretts to flush Brady out because she fears for her young niece, who is at a boarding school in Mexico. Packed with action and feisty characters, Ciotta’s tale reads like a cross between The Wild Wild West and Linda Lael Miller’s western romances. Readers of westerns and fans of western romances should enjoy this. --Diana Tixier Herald
