The U.S. a collection of cities serviced by outlying farms and producers is amazingly transformed into a nation serviced, by a national food production industry to meet the needs of fighting a world war. The armed services, 350,000 strong at the war's start, quickly grew to 11,000,000 men and women who had to be fed along with the millions more on the home front. This is the story of the transformation to meet those needs and the interesting stories about the people, prominent and not-so prominent, of the era and the food they liked to eat and more frequently, what they had to eat. Many stories from the troops on the front are included and so too, many recipes suitable for today's dining

About the Author:

Review:

"My father, Gen. John K. Waters - US Army, raised me to know that the first responsibility of any good commander was to see that his men were well fed. It was so often heard that an 'Army marches on a full stomach and this was the key to winning battles.'

"My grandfather, Gen. George S. Patton, said that 'the soldier is the army' and his well being was predicated on his receiving better food than the enemy'. Kent s book is truly an asset to the American Military library and the people who have served but it is also an inspiration to the future of our Armed Forces. - --George Patton Waters

"The Meals of War is for all of the military cooks and bakers of our armed forces -the dedicated unknowns. As a cook we were sometimes praised and sometimes ridiculed, but in all cases we did our best.We used what we had to see that meals or rations were served, sometimes in very stressful situations. Very seldom was a meal missed. We didn't always have the best, but improvised... and did our best. Without cooks and bakers we could not have won the wars we gallantly fought. - --Earl Richmond WWII Veteran PT108 Gunner and cook

There have been countless books about tanks, planes and ships during World War Two. But not too many about pots, pans and S.O.S. Kent combines history with an often humorous look at military cooking during WWII. - --Christine McKeever Executive Director 6th Cavalry Museum, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia
