Synopsis

In 1992, General Motors introduced the LT1 V-8 engine. This upgraded design, based on the traditional (since 1955) small-block V-8, marked a significant step forward for GM, as the engine was designed to be a modern, efficient, computer-controlled powerplant from the start. This was unlike any other V-8 GM had ever built, and the results were outstanding. The LT1, along with its more powerful stablemate, the LT4, raised the bar for performance-oriented small-blocks until the introduction of the LS1 in 1997. The LT1/LT4 engines are powerful, relatively lightweight, and affordable. They powered Chevrolet's legendary Impala SS (and thousands of similar police cars), Corvettes, and Camaros and remain viable choices for enthusiasts today. This book investigates every component of these engines, discussing their strong and weak points and identifying characteristics. Upgrades and modifications for both improved power production and enhanced durability are described and explained in

About the Authors

Myron Cottrell pioneered the use of the LT1/LT4 engines in many forms of racing. His personal racing ventures in the SCCA Production classes were successful, as were his many customers' experiences with LT1/LT4-powered drag cars and street machines. There are few engine builders in the country with more LT1/LT4 experience than Cottrell, and the broad range of his talents and knowledge of these fine engines shines through on every page.

Eric McClellan is a freelance automotive journalist and has written scores of articles. He holds a masters degree and works as a counselor. Eric enjoys everything automotive and competes in autocross/road racing events. He has built a first-generation Camaro in the Pro-Touring style for both street and track use.

From the Back Cover

GM’s LT1/LT4 engines represented the highest level of small-block V-8 develop-ment for the period between the legendary small-block Chevrolet and the introduction of the LS-series V-8. They powered all of the hottest production vehicles of the 1990s, including the Corvette, Camaro/Firebird, and Caprice/Impala SS. These enhanced small-blocks were reliable and strong, and can be built to impressive performance levels on a relatively small budget, with the right upgrades. This book guides you through the factory and aftermarket components of the LT1/LT4 engines, offering sound performance advice and recommendations. Additionally, complete engine buildup recipes are provided, along with their respective horsepower and torque levels. You can follow the advice of experts and achieve targeted results for your own project.
