This study of the Book of Acts focuses on thirteen portraits or vignettes of what being Jesus' witnesses meant in the lives of the early church. The passages for study offer challenging guidance about what individuals and churches need to do to live up more closely to Jesus' statement in our day. Acts 1:8 serves as the touchstone for all of the Book of Acts, and it continues to challenge us today. Jesus communicated clearly and simply the challenge to those first disciples gathered about him, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth" (Acts 1:8, NASB). As with the church in the Book of Acts, we are to be Jesus' witnesses · In our familiar surroundings-our Jerusalem · In nearby places and opportunities-our Judea · To the places, peoples, and cultures with which we feel much less comfortable and for which we must cross cultural barriers to witness and minister-our Samaria · In the distant places that call for significant decisions for us to go or for significant support of others as they go to "the remotest part of the earth" It is indeed time to act on Acts 1:8.
