Discovery Girls compiled a lot of the letters they receive that are written to Ali, the magazines advice columnist, into a book called Getting Your Questions Answered. It is broken down into six chapters - friends, family, boys, school, body issues/growing up and self-esteem and tough stuff. The way the questions are answered is fabulous! I love that they break down questions and acknowledge everything that is going on in the situation, not just specifically what is being asked. The content is wholesome and an easy read for this age group. They deal with everything from boy crazy friends to peer pressure to coping with the death of a parent. Each answer is positive and offers good advice that I believe parents would agree with if girls asked them the same thing. Although their were plenty of letters regarding body image and self-esteem, I would like to see more on puberty and development, as this fuels many of the issues girls this age face. The editors of Discovery Girls magazine receive thousands of letters from tween girls asking for advice on topics ranging from friendship problems to school problems. This book is a compilation of those queries, along with sensible advice offered up by the magazine's advice columnist, Ali. Body issues, self-esteem, boy problems, and family challenges are also included in the book. What's a girl to do when she has no privacy at home? How should she handle a friend who is pressuring her to cheat on an exam? How can a girl stand up for a friend whose being teased because of her weight? The Fab Girls Guide to Friendship Hardship is geared towards middle-school girls and it deals with many of the difficult problems young girls deal with in regards to friendship. The book is narrated by twins Carmen and Dallas Fabrulezziano who tackle issues such as frenemies, the price of popularity, speaking up about bullies, how to be a good friend, and when to end a destructive friendship. The advice offered by the twins is written in a way that it's accessible to girl's today; it uses their language at the same time it continues to be solid advice. For example, in the section Friendship Advice from Older Girls; it says, You should have more than one close friend at school, or you're going to be very lonely if that friendship ever ends. The book is charming, witty, and it has tons of quizzes, which I used to always love when I was growing up. I think that it would be a great book for any young girl struggling with friendships, and let's face it that's most of them (and probably their moms too). The Fab Girls Guild to Friendship Hardship focuses on what every tween girl worries about . . . friendships. However, what makes this guide a little different is that they talk to your child in a language they can understand. It s kind of like talking to your best friend. What I really liked about this book is that they stress the fact that being the best friend you can be is the way to a happier school life. They also talk about cliques and why girls tend to bond with each other. This was actually an eye-opener even for me.
