Synopsis

Author Peter Bodo Gawenda draws on his own first-hand experience as a child living in Germany during WWII to reflect on the impact the war had on children.  Born in the Third Reich under Hitler, Gawenda, through a child's point of view, invites readers to share his family's heartbreak, joy, humor, and cunning during their days in Oberglogau before their desperate flight from Russian conquerors to the safety of Bavaria. Peter and his brothers saw the war not as military or national history, but as the adventure of everyday living. They experienced bombs dropping, soldiers occupying their home, and prisoners of war marching through the streets--all of which seemed like mere intrusions to their childhood existence. They not only survived, but thrived, during the ''Children's War.'' The strength of family ties carried the Gawenda boys through the War and shaped the author s perspective, making The Children's War an uplifting reading experience.

Review

A child has an ever growing and fascinating perspective on war as it changes the world around them. ''The Children's War: Germany 1939-1949'' is a unique memoir from Peter Bodo Gawenda as he reflects on his childhood in this period of German history. Born in 1937, he shares his earliest memories of a Germany on a rise to a super power, about a Reich that was understood even by the youngest to be something major. With his father drafted into the war machine early in his life, his perspective comes even more comprehensive. Thoughtful and intriguing reading, ''The Children's War'' is a fine pick and is very highly recommended. --Midwest Book Review

1st Printing. Hardbound 8vo (9.25 inches tall) 338 pages. Description: Includes a section of photo plates at the rear. The publisher's blurb reads: ''In this book Peter Gawenda tells his family's story from a child' perspective. Adults may have comprehended the War on a grand scale, but Peter and his brothers saw it not as military or national history but as the adventures of everyday living. Born in 1937, Peter recreates the dramatic story of how he and his three siblings shared their family's celebrations, dangers, and desperate flight. Their father had been drafted in 1939, and he did not return until after the war and his incarceration in several prison camps. His family had long thought him dead. Their mother did what a German mother in the Third Reich was expected to do. She provided for their livelihood, instilled in them self-discipline and taught them everything that was necessary for survival. When their home was confiscated and their village about to be overrun, she led them on a desperate escape by bus, train, and on foot from Eastern Germany and eventually to Bavaria and safety. During these times, children learned about 'things never to talk about' and learned all the Children's Rules.''
