Reviews

Rascal Raccoon has finally managed to kill his archnemesis, the adorable Toonie named Jumpin’ Jackalope. But what is he supposed to do with all of his new extra time? Lost and purposeless, Rascal decides he needs a new target and settles on Pen Man, the animator who drew him. Hay and Wagner pack a lot of action into their story, though the plot does get lost in favor of chaos at times. More distinct artistic styles for the Toonie world and the human one would have helped differentiate the two, but Wagner’s cartoony style and bright colors are a blast. On the surface, this graphic novel seems to skew toward young children, but the high levels of cartoon violence, skimpy outfits, and jokes about Korean animation make this a better fit for teens with the maturity level and knowledge necessary to appreciate the humor. Adults who gobbled up Looney Toons as kids will dig the silliness as well. Grades 9-12. --Snow Wildsmith
