Following the 1893 publication of what was meant to be the last Sherlock Holmes story, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle relented under the pressure of intense public demand and irresistible financial offers from British and American publishers and revived the celebrated sleuth. This audiobook collection of six unabridged stories includes "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire," in which a mother may be both murderer and monster; "The Adventure of the Creeping Man," in which a professor's mysterious malady hints at darker things; and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," in which a woman is terrified she'll join her sister in death at a creepy country house. "The Adventure of the Crooked Man," "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter," and "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" wrap up this second volume of the audio series read by celebrated actor Edward Hardwicke.

Starred Review. Edward Hardwicke, who played Dr. Watson to the late Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes in the celebrated television series, is in top form for this second installment of Conan Doyle's classic mystery stories. Hardwicke's narration is perfect as he again brings to life the lovable Watson and guides the listener through some of Holmes's most exciting and intriguing cases: the adventures of the Sussex Vampire, Creeping Man, Speckled Band, Crooked Man, Greek Interpreter and Naval Treaty. As the great detective gathering clues, utilizing his famed methods and unraveling each mystery, Hardwicke provides a superlative rendering of these treasured stories, which might leave listeners longing to hear Brett's Holmes reply to Hardwicke's Watson, and creates an audio book that will be adored by Holmes fans and provide newcomers with a compelling introduction to the gentlemen at 221B Baker St. (Aug.)

A possible vampire, a speckled band of death, and the disappearance of an important treaty are among the strange subjects of Sherlock Holmes's investigations in six short mysteries. Edward Hardwicke, who played Dr. Watson in the PBS series, gives the good doctor a dignified yet openly admiring and astonished voice as he chronicles Holmes's adventures. For Holmes, Hardwicke's voice is crisp, slightly gruff, and he ably captures the tension as Holmes takes baffling steps in his investigations. The actor also injects much good humor into situations; Holmes's encounter with brother Mycroft, for example, is enough to make listeners wonder if Conan Doyle chuckled as he wrote. Listeners who are looking for an introduction to the famous fictional detective will enjoy this well-read collection. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
