Sport for Development, Peace, and Social Justice goes beyond the individual benefits of sport to look more closely at what sport can offer to groups of people and the communities in which they live. While the domain of sport development is mostly uncharted, editors Robert Schinke and Stephanie Hanrahan integrate sport development projects from different disciplines to challenge readers to broaden the scope of what they think can be achieved through sport.
The 18 chapters, written by some of the world s top sport science scholars, are presented in four trajectories (peace and reconciliation, social justice, health and well-being, and corporate social responsibility) that reflect the sport development literature.
Each chapter contains a different disciplinary approach to sport development that will captivate and stimulate readers to create new collaborations among practitioners and community stakeholders.

About the Author:

Robert J. Schinke is an associate tenured professor at Laurentian University and holds a doctorate in education and a post-doctoral year in positive psychology. His research interests span cultural sport psychology, resilience, and adaptation and his methodological preferences span the qualitative methodologies, employing mainstream and culturally sensitive approaches dependent on population. A former Canadian Equestrian Team member and Pan American Games medalist, Schinke has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and the Canadian Institute for Health Research. His work, the most recent for which he has just been awarded the 2008 Canadian Sport Science Research Award for Community Research, has been published in the International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, The Sport Psychologist, the Journal of Sport and Social Issues, Quest, and the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, among other publishing outlets. He has published two applied sport psychology books, each released in multiple languages, and has three edited compilations. Schinke is the editor of Athletic Insight and he has guest co-edited an installment of the International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology devoted to the intersection of culture and sport and exercise psychology. Schinke is also the chair of his university's research ethics board as well as the chair of Ethics and Qualifications for the Canadian Sport Psychology Association. He and his wife, Erin, have a new son named Harrison.

Stephanie J. Hanrahan, PhD, is an associate professor in the Schools of Human Movement Studies and Psychology and the director of the sport and exercise psychology program at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. As an author and researcher, Hanrahan has obtained 20 grants and published seven books, 26 book chapters, and over 85 articles. She has made hundreds of presentations at professional meetings and to community clubs and organizations, and has served as the editor of the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology from 2006 to 2009. Hanrahan is a fellow of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. She is also a member of the Australian Psychological Society, Sports Medicine Australia, and the International Society of Sport Psychology. As a registered psychologist, she has worked with individuals and teams from all levels of sport (both with and without disabilities), Aboriginal performing artists, Mexican orphans, and teenagers living in poverty. Hanrahan resides in Queensland and enjoys traveling within Australia and abroad.
