His multi-award winning parenting book, Parenting Without Stress® How to Raise Responsible Kids While Keeping a Life of Your Own; was written after numerous requests to write a book specifically for parents, grandparents, and others working with youth outside of schools.
His publications and presentation are how to in that they assume the objective is to promote responsibility, and he demonstrates how to do it. His system motivates young people to want to behave responsibly and to be motivated to put forth effort in learning. His approach relies on internal motivation, rather than on external approaches of manipulation by using rewards and employing coercion in the form of threats or punishments. A prime reason is that internal motivation is more effective in changing long-term behavior than any external approach.
His SYSTEM (not a series of techniques) is proactive, totally noncoercive (yet not permissive) and is based on the simple fact of life that a person can be controlled by another person or organization but only can be changed by the actual person. This understanding that only individuals can change themselves is critical in influencing others. He has presented to government agencies, universities, associations, school districts, and schools in 44 of the United States, in 19 countries, and on 5 continents. He has a world-wide audience of over 15,000 subscribers to his free monthly newsletter, Promoting Responsibility & Learning, which contains short articles on promoting responsibility, increasing effectiveness, improving relationships, promoting learning, parenting, and disciplining without stress.
His approach stemmed from his acquiring knowledge about youth as a parent; recreation director and camp counselor; classroom teacher at the elementary, middle, and high school levels; middle and high school counselor; middle school assistant principal; high school assistant principal of both supervision and control and curriculum and instruction; elementary and high school principal; district director of education; and certification by the William Glasser Institute on Choice Theory, Reality Therapy, and Quality Management.
