Lawrence Lowery taught in the Oakland, CA, public schools before becoming a professor of science education at the University of California, Berkeley. He has more than 40 years’ experience creating science activities and programs, developing curricula, and writing articles and books, including the NSTA Press publication The Everyday Science Sourcebook and the I Wonder Why series.

Review:

At each stage the book would provide an excellent starter to encourage investigation and exploration. In addition to the story the book also includes useful notes for teachers that give a mathematical context to the story and provide a useful selection of ideas that can be used in the classroom. Being based in a fantasy land, the story itself is pretty universal and there are no unfamiliar cultural references. Overall this book is a good resource for teachers and it is a book that children will enjoy reading independently. It is firmly grounded in scientific and mathematical concepts and should encourage observation and exploration by pupils. --Primary Science January/February 2014
