Reviews

Let’s face it, kids: it’s a tough world out there. And the more tasks you master, the easier it is to be independent. In that vein, Oliver and Johnson introduce this “comprehensive guide to managing everyday challenges.” Divided into six parts, like “Get to Know Your Kitchen” and “Clean Up like a Pro,” the 50 total skills include the deceptively simple (folding a fitted sheet) and the seemingly difficult (pitching a tent). The design here is rudimentary; basic line drawings correspond to numbered instructions, each of which is a manageable two sentences or less. A couple of symbols appear throughout: a lightbulb, which offers additional helpful tips, and the warning triangle, which denotes safety issues (e.g., in the case of ironing). Although some of these may seem to fall under the category of common sense, like washing a car or getting a good night’s sleep, others, from fixing a flat to tying a bow tie, take some practice. It’s amazing how many little, useful skills there are to know; this is a good choice for teens heading off to college. Grades 7-12. --Ann Kelley
