2017 Writers' League of Texas Book Award Finalist2018-2019 First Nation Communities Read Shortlist 2018 Oklahoma Book Award Finalist2019 Children's Literacy Initiative - Native American Heritage Month Book ListBorn with the gift of painting with the clouds, Leona, a little Choctaw girl, uses the sky as her canvas to the delight of her people. When a traveling man learns of her gift and invites her to join the carnival, the Cloud Artist must make a decision about what kind of artist she wants to be. This picture book is part historical fiction, a lot of fantasy, and a little dab of tall tale. Over thirty follow-up activities are available on author's website. In English with Choctaw translation included.

The Cloud Artist came into being because I had a dream about it. In my dream I had written the book, got it under contract, and a publisher had released it. In the dream I received a phone call to tell me it was getting great reviews. I was so happy when I woke up I was close to tears . . . happy ones. I hope people appreciate this young, strong female character who chooses her own path in life as well as how she wants to use her artistic skills. The illustrator, Merisha Lemmer Clark, brought my vision of the cloud art to life and hopefully young artists will try their own hand at cloud painting on paper. I was so happy to have this book translated into the Choctaw language by Dora Wickson who is an official Choctaw Nation translator. I just hope children enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed writing it.
An Oklahoma Choctaw, Sherri Maret is a former teacher and library media specialist who makes her home in Pennsylvania. Proof, however, that the Choctaw world is a small one: In the course of working on this book, the author and illustrator learned--despite living on opposite sides of the country--that they are cousins.
Merisha Sequoia Clark is an Oklahoma Choctaw who makes her home in northern California. She is also the illustrator of the Once Upon the West fractured fairy tale, Little Red Riding Boots.
