About the Author

Cooking and storytelling have always gone hand in hand for Kathy Rice, thanks to her grandmother who loved to cook for her family and tell her granddaughter stories. Eager to hear these tales of the "olden days", Kathy spent countless hours on a weathered porch swing in rural Michigan listening to Grandma share a time when life was simpler and when food and family were the center of everything. Cooking for family and friends became one of Kathy's passions. After careers in nursing and interior design, Kathy and her loved ones made the move to the small harbor town and thriving art community of Grand Marais, Minnesota. They opened an art gallery and purchased The Pie Place Cafe', a local legend for its homemade pies. Soon, this culinary family created a cozy restaurant featuring gourmet home cooking and a family feeling that guests drive miles to experience, and keeps them coming back. It became a place to hear stories, but also where people listen to stories. Today, Kathy is a busy artist and board member of the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, and an active supporter and advocate of prison art programs. She is also an experienced beekeeper, storyteller and writer. She loves to hike trails and walk the shores of Lake Superior and feels blessed to live where she does. "We are all here to bear witness to one another, as we make this journey called life," Kathy believes. "Everyone has a story to tell ... but not everyone takes the time to listen."
