K-Gr 2—This imported series takes a different approach than many math picture books on American shelves today. While the contrived story lines are somewhat limited, the beautiful illustrations creatively present explanations of mathematical ideas. The Flying Birds tells the tale of an old carpenter who makes birdhouses and follows the progress of the animals, building more homes as they multiply. The math is explicit here, with sidebars explaining and demonstrating the equations used, along with illustrations designed for counting. Rather than teaching children how to tell time, A Day at Grandma's focuses on how different times of the day feel. Readers follow a day in the life of young Yujin, who is visiting her grandmother in the country, and her mother, who remains at home in the city. Math at the Art Museum is a standout among math/art books, portraying a fictional family learning about different concepts (symmetry, shapes, perspective, time) by observing classic paintings by artists such as Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, and Salvador Dalí. Unfamiliar words are seamlessly defined within the sparse text, while the images expand on the ideas introduced. Back matter for all the books provides a few math activities and games, as well as more examples of the concepts described in the story.
