Serge Dedina takes us on a journey into the world of surf culture and travels around the globe to highlight how surfing connects us to the increasingly scarce natural and cultural niches that remain. Whether he is exploring the wilds of Mexico and Australia or getting a surfing makeover from his teenage sons, Dedina shows us with humor and passion, how riding waves is a gateway to the world beyond the beach.

Dedina is an award-winning conservationist who learned to surf in the 1970s in the border town of Imperial Beach, California, where he shared waves with colorful characters such as The Hulk and The Electric Duck. A former ocean lifeguard, he has lived and surfed in Mexico, El Salvador, Morocco, England, Spain, Peru, Australia, and France. These experiences, and his career as a coastal conservationist, form Dedina's view of surfers as outsiders on the edge of civilization who are able to experience life beyond borders. For Dedina, his life of surf travel and living between borders has helped him to find the original and unique among our increasingly crowded and homogenous world.
