I have spent the past 31 years working, living, and walking in Humboldt County. While I have always enjoyed exploring the walking opportunities in my own backyard, beginning in 2013 I tried to take a more systematic approach to creating a comprehensive guide to walking in our county. I tried to minimize overlap with Hiking Humboldt: Volume 1 and thus focused on shorter walks available in Redwood National Park and our state parks, and wove in interesting urban walks. I consider the road walks that I included from some of Humboldt County's 1,300 miles of public roads to be one of the best ways to explore every part of the county. In the end, it was very difficult to cull the total number of hikes to 101. I included lots of extras and options in my descriptions and easy could have included another 50 walks. For many potential readers, it may seem a stretch to create a book with hikes in just one county. Humboldt County is no ordinary county. With about 110 miles of coastline, mountains that rise to 7,000 feet, deep river valleys, redwood forests, Redwood National Park and five state parks, and stunning oak woodlands, there is an incredible amount packed into our 4,000 square miles. The county is bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined and half the size of New Jersey. This project has again been a labor of love. All author royalties are being donated to the Humboldt Bay Trail Endowment Fund.
Walked his way through some of the most stunning regions on Earth from the top of Kilimanjaro to the arid interior of Australia, from the pilgrimage route up Sri Pada in Sri Lanka to the picturesque Cornish coast, from the Himalayas to the Andes but has found little that compares with the magic of the Klamath Knot. Co-editor of The Pacific Crest Trailside Readers , he also serves as a volunteer trail steward coordinator, and is an advocate for the Humboldt Bay Trail.
Rees retired from a career in higher education after more than three decades at Humboldt State University, Seattle University, and the University of Kansas. He has a PhD from the University of Washington.
