About the Author:
Dr. Gary Benfield’s Biography I grew up in a housing project in South Baltimore. It was built by the Federal Government during World War II for workers in the shipyards. My two best friends lived on each side of us. Believe it or not, all three of us went on to graduate from medical school and became doctors. Just three kids from the neighborhood. But before I found my way to medical school, I graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering. Then I went to work as an electrical engineer. Wanting to do more than sit behind a desk and do calculations on a slide rule, I quit my job, sold my car and went back to school. I hoped to earn enough pre-med credits to qualify for medical school. And that’s exactly what happened. After graduating from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1965 and completing my training in pediatrics, I served two years as a pediatrician in the Air Force. Then I took two years of training in neonatology (caring for seriously-ill newborns) at the Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati. When I completed my training in neonatology, it was 1972. I accepted an offer to head up the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio. I worked there until 2007, taking care of seriously ill babies and their parents. A 35 year dream job come true. During that time, I also completed my Master’s Degree in Philosophy at Kent State University. Then my wife and I moved in 2007 to Chapin, S.C., where we have lived ever since. In 1997, I started writing a weekly medical column, “The Baby Beat,” for the Alliance Review, Alliance, Ohio’s daily newspaper. In 2016, after writing some 988 columns, I said goodbye in order to devote more time to writing children’s books and promoting the value of reading aloud to children. I love the characters in our award-winning series of five Leaping Larry Picture Books and the magical stories they tell me. Yes, it’s as if they are writing their own stories. Imagine that! And I love collaborating with Chris Sharp, who illustrates my books. This is the fourth volume in a new series of baby books: “Hi, Baby!” And to top it all off, I have three grown daughters, six terrific granddaughters and a wonderful wife, Cathy. Dr. Gary
