Jonathan Litton has written numerous children's books in prose and verse. He loves using his science background to write about sea creatures, space and saving the planet, but is also fond of penning stories about pirates, princesses and picnics. When not writing, he can usually be found on his bike.
Gr 3–6—A celebration of language and culture, this illustrated book with flaps introduces students to six continents (Antarctica is not included) and the languages of each country within each continent. The maps are colorful and engaging. Each country is represented by a small person dressed in ethnic garb accompanied by a speech bubble with the word for hello. A pronunciation guide, the name of the language, and the number of speakers in that region are found under each flap. In the North America spread, readers learn of the eight popular languages spoken in the United States and how the Aztecs and Mayans developed writing systems based on hieroglyphics. In addition, readers can learn how to say hello in Native American Hand Talk and American Sign Language by lifting the flaps and following the steps. VERDICT Readers will want to revisit this selection, as they can learn more with every lift of a flap. The large trim size and sturdy pages make this a browsable primer on global languages.—Annette Herbert, F.E. Smith Elementary School, Cortland, NY
