When I helped my church convert their accounting system a few years ago, I was surprised how few resources there were to explain how church accounting works. This led to the first book of The Accountant Beside You series, QuickBooks for Churches and Other Religious Organizations. Now, less than three years later, there are four books in the series helping over 10,000 organizations. As time moves on, so does technology. More and more organizations want the convenience of an internet-based accounting system. I'm Lisa London, and alongside CPA Eulica Kimber, we'll be The Accountant Beside You guiding you through the process of setting up QuickBooks Online and maintaining a streamlined accounting process for your nonprofit or church. As a CPA for several decades, I have helped many small, medium-sized, and start-up companies establish accounting systems to streamline their businesses. As a person who finds it hard to turn down requests from organizations I volunteer with, I have served on boards of various nonprofits, on the audit committees for several churches, and as church treasurer. My accounting career started as an auditor with Deloitte, one of the world's largest accounting firms, where I learned the importance of internal accounting controls. Eulica Kimber, a CPA from Virginia, operates Firm Foundations Accounting Solutions and specializes in providing accounting services to churches, small businesses, and nonprofits. Her background as a federal auditor and a QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor has given her a strong understanding of both controls and accounting systems. Her clients use QBO almost exclusively. Her extensive experience enabled me to bring this book to life. Keep it simple is our motto. We are going to walk you through the nonprofit specific terminology you need to know, teach you what the QuickBooks limitations are for nonprofit organizations and provide work arounds, and help you design internal accounting controls. Then, you'll learn how to set up your organization's accounting system, pay bills, and receive money through the system. Month and year-end reporting and review will be covered, and finally, you'll learn some unusual and non-frequent items that you need to consider. Our approach is designed to quickly and easily get you up and running on the processes nonprofits use frequently and find the most important. This book is not meant to be read once and forgotten. Keep it close to the computer, use what you need, and check my website, accountantbesideyou.com, for additional tips, videos, discussions, and updates.
Lisa London, CPA, is the author of the popular Accountant Beside You series, a series written to help non-accountants understand the accounting needs of churches, nonprofits, & small businesses. Her QuickBooks for Churches & Other Religious Organizations is currently being used on all inhabitable continents (and if she knew anyone with a church in Antarctica, she'd be happy to donate one). Even before starting her accounting career, she kept the books for her parents' farm and businesses. After graduating from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Lisa went to work for Deloitte as an auditor and small business consultant. Training office staff, plant managers, entrepreneurs, and high school and college students has been an integral part of her professional experience. From Auditor to CFO, throughout her career, Lisa has been known as the "Accountant Beside You" to many teams, companies, and corporate officers. In addition to her corporate experience, Lisa has more than fifteen years of experience auditing churches. She has also served on a church finance committee and as treasurer for a private school.
