9781946210005: What The Church Can Learn From Harley-Davidson: Connecting With Today's Culture

Synopsis

SERVING JESUS should be an outward-focused adventure. Unfortunately, many churches have become inward-focused over time and have lost the ability to connect with the culture of today. Just as many people are afraid of riding motorcycles, some church attenders are afraid of making relationships with people who live and act differently. This disconnect tends to show a judgmental attitude from the Church towards others. The Harley-Davidson story is a great example of an organization that accepts anyone who comes in the door. Outlaw Bikers, Rich Urban Bikers, and those in between are treated the same when they enter the Harley-Davidson Dealerships. Their acceptance and lack of judgement gives bikers the gift of belonging. Isn't this what the church should be about? Take this journey with us as you explore what the Church can learn from Harley Davidson.-Dave and Debbie Cole

About the Author

Dave E. Cole grew up in the Pacific Northwest and prior to
becoming a pastor, he co-owned and operated a successful painting
company in the Seattle area while attending college. His expertise
with both the secular business and church world brings a wide
arena of knowledge and experience in helping organizations and
churches refocus from an inward-focused culture to an outward-focused
culture.
Dave and his wife Debbie became lead pastors in East
Wenatchee, Washington in 1982. During this time, Dave began
a motorcycle ministry in the church called the "ICC Riders." The
church bikers were challenged to reach out to those in this subcul-
ture. Soon the parking lot at the church began to be filled
with motorcycles.
In 2002 Dave moved to Seattle as a team leader with the
Northwest Ministry Network, and continued to challenge pastors
and congregations to move beyond the status quo. During this
time, Dave and Debbie began regular motorcycle rides for pastors
and spouses that created community and health. Recently, Dave
completed his doctoral studies in developing an outward-focused
church culture and marked over 100,000 miles on his
Harley-Davidson.
