Gunnery Sargent Perceval Stone, a third-generation Marine, is suddenly medically retired.
After all of the collective damage of many wars and actions, an IED leaves him with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
Stone is a walking mental time-bomb like so many others who have lost their compass. If he can't find his center and path, he may never get back.
Walking away confused. from the only home and family he has ever known, he has a phone in his pocket that he does not know how to use, a pesky yeoman stalking his every move, and is on an $800 motorcycle, headed west from Bethesda, MD searching for what it means to be a civilian, and what makes home, home.
In an effort to find his peace, he ends up beside a tranquil lake, watching a perfect sunset.
And then the phone rings . . .
.
.

..".friend... - Of all the words, of all the elements of the story, as a Veteran, this is the most important word in the entire book. The story itself tells an all too often tale that touches the lives of many."
-- NEVEN L. GIBBS, SSG CAV (RET.), WRITER
"This is such an enjoyable read that I finished it on the planes during two travel days. The story of the men (and women too) who served this nation and came back less than whole for it struck me deeply, as several of them could easily have been soldiers who reported to me during my own service.
Baer uses everything to draw us in: humor, gently explained where needed; strong characters who have a weakness; weak characters who have strength; and a depth of humanity. I guarantee you can't read this story without tearing up a few times.
If you're a veteran, as I am, you'll find the tale will smack you in the gut. If you're not, I believe you'll still find the story accessible and a great read."
--Stephan H. King
"Baer Charlton has crafted a beautifully visual piece weaving real and soul-driven characters into an endearing tale of love, loss, and reinvention. Through the post-military experience of his protagonist, Gunnery Sergeant Stone, Charlton shines a light on the painful healing process of PTSD, the true value of service, the joys, and sorrows of friendship, and the ache of a heart as it slowly reawakens to the amazing power of love."
--Jylian Sy, Survivor
"This is the last book my dad will probably ever read (due to his deteriorating health condition, he can no longer focus).
It is also the only new book he's read in years (versus rereading from his massive library/collection).
He LOVED it.
Nuff said."
--Angelfish
"Baer's stories are about his characters, and he never disappoints. Although, I think every book
should come with a box of Kleenex tissues - - or two.
I expected a story about a marine that struggles to find his way home. What I didn't expect was
what Mr. Charlton delivers and then doubles down when he brings his story here to Oregon. His
insights are deep, and heart-rending. He points out the little things that we don't think about, such
as a young man who has lost his legs. It's not his legs that he misses the most, it is that he can no
longer drive a car on a summers evening, with his one arm around a girl, and the other elbow out
the window as he drives with one finger on the steering wheel.
Baer's insights into those who have been changed forever are powerful and delivered in the
offhanded way that real life presents. He never preaches. He doesn't pound the pulpit; he just
reports things like a friend telling about their day at the dinner table.
What struck me most is that I know writers write their books years before they are published. But
with the events this last year - - the huge fires in the west, with Congress acting like children and
"de-funding support to millions of our Vets; it seems like the news is ripping its headlines from
the pages of Stoneheart.
Oprah, if you are listening, this is an important book that you need to read. One from the heart."
