Synopsis
This book is the only book in the Distinctively Christian Series that addresses the topic of worldview and faith development during grades three through five or six. It is written for application within both the Church and Christian schools. During these important years, children think at a more advanced level, are more focused on self and their relationship to others, and desire purposeful engagement. Subsequently, these changes impact teaching, classroom experiences, and most importantly program expectations (outcomes). Worldview is already largely in place by the sixth grade so elementary ministry plays a vital role if the church is to reach the next generation. Distinctively Christian: A Christ-centered Worldview Approach to Elementary Ministry is written to provide insights into greater effectiveness. Program directors, teachers, and parents will be encouraged to:
- Understand the nature and needs of children ages eight to ten
- Engage children in purposeful, other-directed activities
- Take advantage of a desire to be challenged spiritually by expecting children to think and understand at a deeper level
- Use a more responsive approach to teaching, less telling and more asking
- Realize that positive classroom relationships between teacher and peers impact the heart and are therefore important factors related to spiritual formation
- Always apply biblical truths to life and teach with an expectation that children will not just know but also act upon instruction
- Model the truths being taught
- Observe children, talk with parents, and question students as a means of assessing spiritual growth and the effectiveness of the curriculum.
