With no one to buy the gold, Catell follows a lead to California, to a man named Smith... and a woman named Lily. But right behind him is Selma, the crazy alcoholic who won’t let him go. Selma is going to follow Catell to Hell before she lets him get away.

The time, September 1942. The place, northern Africa. The mission, to cross 800 miles of desert and blow up the German fuel supply at Tobruk. The instigators, a motley crew of British soldiers under the command of by-the-books Colonel Harker and a handful of German Jews set on revenge—disguised as German POWs, they are led by the reluctant Major Craig and the hard-headed Captain Bergman on a mission none of them have a lot of faith in. The distraction, Cheryl, the nymphomaniac daughter of a British spy on a secret mission to Cairo. The bigger problem, a traitor in their midst. The outcome… one chance in a million.

About the Author

Peter Rabe was born in Germany as Peter Rabinowitsch on November 3, 1921, immigrating to the U.S. with his brother in 1938 to escape the Nazis. He enrolled at Ohio State University and received his Ph.D. in psychology from Western Reserve in Cleveland. Married, he began his writing career by turning in a humorous story about the birth of his first child. Soon after, he began submitting hardboiled stories to Gold Medal where he found an enthusiastic editor and a ready market. After three divorces, health problems and the death of the paperback original, Rabe eventually quit writing and took up teaching psychology at California Polytechnic State University in the late 60's. He died on May 20, 1990 at his home in Atascadero, California.
