Jack Kade built his life on numbers. Then one routine audit changed the equation.
As CFO of a rapidly growing public company, Jack has wealth, influence, and a reputation built on high-stakes deals. When an ambitious auditor flags what appears to be a minor reporting omission, Jack expects a problem to solve. Instead, he watches colleagues distance themselves, prosecutors close in, and the system he once trusted turn against him.
Convicted of white-collar crimes and sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison, Jack loses his career, his fortune, and years with his family.
Fourteen years behind bars teach him a different kind of accounting.
Power is not measured in money or titles. It lies in information, leverage, and knowing which secrets others cannot afford to expose.
Now Jack has a plan.
The people who helped destroy him have had years to move on. Jack has had years to remember.
The Retributionist: Rising from the Ashes is a legal and financial thriller about betrayal, institutional power, and the line between revenge and retribution. Drawing inspiration from real systems, experiences, and questions of justice, it occupies the uneasy territory author Jon Nelson calls FACT-ion—where fiction sits close enough to reality to leave readers wondering what could be true.

Jon Nelson is the author of The Retributionist, a thriller series exploring the shifting line between justice and judgment, truth and fiction, and revenge and retribution. Drawing on experiences and environments familiar from his own life, Nelson describes his approach as “FACT-ion”—fiction grounded closely enough in reality to leave readers questioning where one ends and the other begins.
Nelson wrote The Retributionist and its two sequels entirely by hand while serving time in federal prison. Working as a janitor in the prison chapel, he transformed a small mop closet into a makeshift writing space, spending his days studying, journaling, and filling pages with the story that would become the series. Manuscript pages were mailed home over time to be typed and preserved by the woman who would later become his wife.
Released from federal prison in 2020 under the CARES Act, Nelson continues to write and develop The Retributionist series while reflecting on the experiences that shaped its themes of institutional power, human judgment, resilience, and redemption. He lives with his wife and remains closely connected to their family.
