Synopsis

A More Human Future Begins with a New Curriculum

AI is already transforming how we work, learn, and create. What should education prepare us to become—and how can we begin the transition?

In The Human Curriculum: Rethinking Education for the Era of AI, Peter Y. Lee offers a systematic and hopeful examination of education’s changing purpose. He places human development, judgment, and lifelong learning at the center, asking which capabilities people must develop when powerful intellectual assistance is readily available.

Drawing on research and real-world examples, Lee explores three connected questions:

  • Education for an AI World. What knowledge, capabilities, and values will help people think independently, exercise sound judgment, act with purpose, and use powerful tools responsibly?
  • Education Using AI. How can AI support more personal, effective, and equitable learning while preserving the practice, human relationships, and thoughtful guidance through which learners develop?
  • The Future of Curriculum and Credentials. What should we teach, how should we assess learning, and how can institutions move from the existing framework of courses, credits, and degrees toward stronger evidence of competence?

The book outlines a practical, gradual pathway: make competencies explicit, strengthen evidence of learning, allow mastery to guide progression, and develop richer credentials within existing educational structures.

Written for educators, parents, students, policymakers, and anyone concerned about the future of learning, The Human Curriculum offers a framework for deciding what to preserve, what to change, and how to begin. Its vision extends from preparation for work to creativity, citizenship, responsibility, and a fulfilling human life.

The future of education is a question of what we want people to become—and what kind of world they will help create.

About the Author

Peter Y. Lee, Ph.D., is an educator, scientist, and author whose work spans physics, electrical engineering, quantum computing, and education. Trained in physics and electrical engineering, he earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University and began his career at Bell Labs, working in photonics and optical communications. He later taught at the middle-school, high-school, and college levels and became involved in curriculum development, academic program design, and the establishment and accreditation of schools and colleges. He is also a co-author of books on quantum computing and has pursued extensive lifelong study across the humanities, social sciences, education, and the sciences. His interdisciplinary background has shaped a long-standing interest in how people learn, how difficult ideas can be scaffolded, and how education should respond when powerful technologies change the nature of intellectual work. In The Human Curriculum, he brings together perspectives from science, teaching, institutional leadership, and lifelong learning to explore what people should still know, practice, judge, and take responsibility for in an age of increasingly capable AI.
