Synopsis

Between fathers and sons. the things that aren’t talked about often make the biggest impact.

His father’s experiences in WWII cast a shadow over Don’s childhood. Every issue was filtered through his father’s silent grief, strict discipline, and lessons in survival. Don struggled to understand the mythic events that occurred before he was born—the Marine Corps and the war—because he felt the continued power of those distant events. Whatever happened to his father still lived, and Don felt compelled to find it and face it. So, he joined the Marines and went to Vietnam.

Read his story and his father’s.

About the Author

Don Catherall's career as a psychologist focused on the treatment of people exposed to trauma. This book, however, is his personal story. He served as a Marine infantryman in Vietnam, and his father served in the South Pacific in World War II. Their family life was shaped by the shadow of war.
