Horacio Quiroga fue un dramaturgo uruguayo, poeta y cuentista. Escribió historias que, a su configuración de la selva, usan lo sobrenatural y lo extraño para mostrar la lucha del hombre y de los animales para sobrevivir. También se destacó en retratar la enfermedad mental y estados alucinatorios. Su influencia se puede ver en el realismo mágico latinoamericano de Gabriel García Márquez y el surrealismo posmoderna de Julio Cortázar.
