HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED This reader consists of 18 Bulgarian folktales and legends followed by a glossary and exercises. There are five type of exercises to practice language skills and language areas: 1) reading comprehension; 2) vocabulary; 3) grammar; 4) speaking; 5) writing. The exercises are arranged by degree of difficulty – from easier to more difficult. Even though the folktales are not related to each other, it is recommended that they be read in order because new vocabulary words are introduced and translated only the first time they are encountered. A key to the exercises for reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar can be found at the end of the reader. All folktales and legends have been translated into English, as well. HOW THE TEXTS ARE WRITTEN The original texts have been simplified to suit the language levels and the needs of the learners. Most dated and difficult words have been replaced by more common and relevant ones. Grammatical structures have also been carefully chosen and edited but the language is still natural and comprehensive. All texts are written in the so-called non-witness mood that is used in folktales, legends and some historical texts. There is a table at the end of the reader showing all of the tenses in Bulgarian and their corresponding forms in the non-witness mood. WHO CAN USE THIS BOOK Bulgarian Folktales and Legends is a reference book for intermediate students of Bulgarian who speak English. Teachers of Bulgarian will also find this book useful as an additional course material.
