The Ballad of Reading Gaol is the 1904 poem by the famous Irish author Oscar Wilde. Written in exile in Berneval-le-Grand, after his release from the prison in Berkshire, England, HM Prison Reading. The poem narrates the execution of Charles Thomas Wooldridge, a trooper in the Royal Horse Guard, for murdering his wife.
