This book brings together over a dozen journal articles and book chapters written between 2000-2018. It is in two (connected) parts. Part One is mainly concerned with transnational migration, principally, but not only, between Africa and Europe, and documents its ongoing significance in the lives of migrants both ‘there’ (where migrants come from) and ‘here’ (where they live and work). Part Two then focuses on the ‘here’, and the ethnic, social, cultural and religious diversity which transnational migration has generated in what were previously thought of as relatively homogeneous societies. The book thus concerns what has been described as a 21st century ‘crisis of difference’, the cause of much anxiety and heated political debate, not least in the UK, about the governance of diversity in the contemporary world.
