About the Author

SAX ROHMER, a pseudonym for the British writer Arthur Sarsfield Ward (1883–1959), was born in Birmingham to an Irish working class family. In 1886, his family moved to London, and in 1901 he completed his formal education. He was on the path of becoming a civil servant before pursuing a career as a writer. In 1903 he sold his first story, “The Mysterious Mummy” to Pearson’s Weekly. In 1909 he married Rose Elizabeth Knox and stayed with her until his death in London from influenza. Success and popularity came to Rohmer in 1913 with the publishing of Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu, serialized from October 1912 to June 1913. This was the world’s introduction to the sinister Chinese criminal genius, Fu Manchu. Rohmer wrote 13 Fu Manchu novels, and the character became popular in movies, radio, TV and in the comics. The CANNON BOOKS edition of Dope is edited by Ron D’Alena. D’Alena was born in San Francisco and earned an MBA at the University of San Francisco. He worked for several Bay Area technology research companies followed by a stint at Cisco Systems before moving to Oregon. He now enjoys an outdoor lifestyle, guitar hacking, his family and writing. Over the years, his short stories have appeared in numerous journals and magazines.
