This volume of “Combat Veterans’ Stories of the Vinam War” contains 15 autobiographical stories. The first begins in late October 1967, and is told by a Marine rifleman that fought in battles at Mike’s Hill, Foxtrot Ridge, and numerous others. The final story, in this volume, is told by an Army cavalry officer that led a platoon of armored personnel carriers with such ability and daring that he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, three Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. The other stories in Volume 3 include those told by a U.S. Army artillery officer, a Marine helicopter pilot, a naval officer on offshore fire support duty, and two men that served in the U.S. Navy’s Mobile Riverine Force. Photos used in this volume were supplied by the men interviewed. Volumes 1-4 of this series contain combat experiences told by 57 Vietnam War veterans. Volume 4 also contains information about the armed forces of nations allied with the U.S. that fought against North Vietnam. Volume 5 contains the U.S. government’s explanation for the war, a review of the war and U.S. armed forces in it, POW treatment, MIAs, the CIA and the drug trade, war crimes, PTSD, moral injury, and history lessons not learned. It also contains a brief photo overview of combat in South Vietnam, in 1968, a decisive year in the war.
