On December 5, 2008, Kimberly Phillips was sentenced to twenty-eight years and seven months in prison. This time frame was considered an exceptional sentence and goes beyond the high end of the sentencing guidelines. Instead of giving up hope, Kimberly found an overwhelming purpose for life in her confinement. She practiced the hope of living for God's glory by allowing God's presence to soak into her being and heal her from the inside out. The power of prayer had destroyed the yoke around her neck. This is her story of going beyond what she imagined herself capable. This is her story of transformation. Kimberly writes, "I signed up for every church service that I could possibly get into. God started transitioning me from working in the kitchen to working in the unit as a janitor. I was still being a servant to the women but in a different capacity. It wasn't easy to clean up after the women in the bathrooms and day room. God was humbling me even more. I was cleaning up after 150 women. And while I was doing this I was praying the Jabez prayer, asking God to expand my territory (1 Chronicles 4:10). I didn't really know what I was asking but apparently God felt I was ready because God sure did expand my territory! . . . as God continued a humble transformation in my life, I finally felt free of my past and gave the women in here hope that they can be free, too. Freedom is not just a physical action, it is also a state of being. I eventually transferred to work in the chapel library where God used the gifts he gave me to lay hands on his daughters and pray for them just like Isaiah 61 says, 'The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.' (ESV) I was seeing this verse manifest right in front of me as I continue to do God's will. I know that God was being glorified through this process. That was all that mattered to me now."
