About the Author

Ruby Lovell was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and moved to the UK aged seven years old. As a child, Ruby was extremely sporty and excelled at athletics and tennis: winning numerous races and tennis tournaments at a young age and representing Surrey county in South London where she still lives... She was also extremely creative, and would write plays, songs and short stories in addition to participating in acting and dancing. Having married an Englishman after moving to the UK, she had two children of mixed race: her childhood in Sri Lanka and her children's holidays to the island paved the way to inspire the Ruby series of books, which have opened up a whole new world for Western children and educated them in a culture unknown through the adventures of a little girl called Ruby.

Review

Oddsocksandlollipops.co.uk; Ruby Rides an Elephant is a wonderful story about a little girl, Ruby, whose daddy is from Sri Lanka and whose mummy is English. As my daughter has parents from two different countries, in our case, an English mummy and a Danish daddy, she instantly felt a connection to Ruby. This was wonderful as we read the story for the first time she was pointing out so many similarities between herself and Ruby, such as what they both take on holiday in their backpacks; The text is wonderful to read, and I love that certain works are in a different colour, really making them stand out, such as the colours of the saris, the noises the animals make and the descriptions of Rani the elephant. There is even a song, which my daughter calls the Tuk Tuk song, which she loves to have me read.; Ruby Rides an Elephant is a fantastic book to introduce the idea of cultural differences and to get young children talking about differences and similarities - and above all learning empathy and an appreciation for other cultures. It follows a special little girl on a big adventure and it shows children that differences are to be celebrated and that we have so much to learn about other people.; Eastern Eye; An interesting journey led Ruby Lovell towards writing her new children's book Ruby Rides An Elephant; Born in Sri Lanka, she moved to London at a young age, travelled globally and then became a mother of two Anglo-Asian children.; The multi-dimensional experiences and starting a family inspired her to write the picture book, which she hopes sparks children's curiosity about different cultures and customs in south-east Asian countries. The book follows the adventures of a mixed-race girl from London as she explores her father's homeland of Sri Lanka for the first time.; Armadillo; Ruby Rides An Elephant is a vibrant new picture book rejoicing diversity and encouraging curiosity in other cultures, inspired by the author's own experience of teaching her mixed-race children about their Sri Lankan heritage. We meet Ruby on the holiday of a lifetime with her parents on the tropical island of Sri Lanka. She goes on amazing elephant ride through forests and jungles, past beautiful lakes and up incredible mountains. On her journey she makes a new best friend. Ruby Rides an Elephant is an educational picture book packed with lots of facts and information about Sri Lanka, from climbing landmarks like Sigiriya Rock, to learning to play traditional Tamil drums. The text is longer than the average picture book therefore it is aimed more at the 3+ age range. With its a mix of prose, rhyme and sound effects the playful text gives readers much to enjoy. The illustrations by Zara Merrick are rich and colourful. A great book for celebrating diversity.
