Fire in Coventry: The amazing and heart-warming story of renewal in the Diocese of Coventry after the Second World War, now re-issued in celebration of the 2018 Centenary of the Diocese of Coventry. This wonderful book gives the sense of excitement surrounding the consecration of the new cathedral in 1962. With a new Foreword by the current Bishop of Coventry, Dr Christopher Cocksworth, the book’s first half provides an narrative of emerging events, giving a vivid description of the small-group meetings, the conversations with the then-Bishop, Cuthbert Bardsley, and the way that people – many of whom had experienced the horror of war first-hand – were deeply moved by the pilgrimage of the Cross of Nails through the Diocese. The second half then focuses on the spiritual significance of these events, and contains nuanced and deep reflections on humility, trust, and love. Authored by Stephen Verney, a former Diocesan Missioner, the book’s first-person view also gives a portrait of a young leader who is struggling to respond to God’s calling and to the needs of a particular community.
